Preparing a Study Paper

  1. Type or print on standard 8˝ x 11-inch white paper, double space throughout, using standard margins and one side of paper only.
( Suggested Fonts  Times Roman, Arial  and  Size 14 ).

  2. Number all pages consecutively in the upper right hand corner beginning with title page.  Title page must include:  author's name and address, chapter name and number, date presented to one's chapter, and date submitted.  If more than one author, list all.  If submitted by a chapter, give chapter name as author.  NO CHAPTER NAME, CHAPTER NUMBER OR MEMBER'S NAME SHALL BE MENTIONED AFTER THE COVER PAGE.

  3. Document direct quotes, paraphrasing, and ideas and information borrowed in PARENTHETICAL ENCLOSURES within the text, following the material borrowed.  The enclosure should include the author's last name and page reference.  See examples.

  4. Document LIST OF SOURCES on final numbered page.  Include the source of any direct quote or borrowed idea used in the paper.  List sources alphabetically by the main author's name.

    a.  The title of a book follows the author's name and is underlined.  Additional authors' names follow the main author's name in natural order.  The place of publication is followed by a colon, followed by the publisher's name.  A comma separates the publisher and the date of publication.

    b.  The title of an article in a periodical is put in quotation marks after the author's name.  The name of the periodical is underlined followed by the date published.

    c.  For Internet Sources include:

    1)  Name of Author (if any)
    2)  Title of text underlined
    3)  Complete Internet address (as found at bottom of page when printed from the computer)
    4)  Page number
    5)  Date of Access

    See examples.

  5. To avoid repetition, previous study papers of Questers should not be used for research.

  6. The text must be at least five pages.  Papers over twenty pages are discouraged.

  7. Illustrations, (photographs, maps, line drawings, graphs or charts) should be labeled Figure (Fig.), assigned an Arabic number, and given title or caption.  Give source under caption and place illustrations as close as possible to the text to which they relate.  (i.e. See examples.)

  8. All Questers who submit study papers and Founder's Award papers are deemed to do so for the benefit of The Questers and all its members.  Submission of any paper will constitute a non-exclusive assignment to The Questers of any and all rights the author might have under copyright laws.  The Questers may reproduce any paper, in whole or in part, for members' research and education.

  9. Judging depends on these guidelines for format, parenthetical enclosures, list of sources, and use of illustrations.  Other judging criteria are:

  • Interest and educational value to Questers
  • Spelling, punctuation, grammar
  • Proper interpretation and development of topic
  • Originality and creativity
  • Organization, presentation, and continuity
  • Evidence of research and value of research
  • Writing style:  unity, coherence, vocabulary
  1. Questers who have been active members since the paper was written should send two UNSTAPLED  copies of the study paper to International Headquarters.  Do not staple copies.  One copy will then be sent to the International Second Vice President who will acknowledge it when received.  After being read and judged, it will be returned to Headquarters to be filed according to subject in the study paper files and be available to Quester members only.  New papers will be listed in "The Quester Quarterly" at intervals.  Authors of commended papers (score 80% or over) will be issued a certificate signed by the International President.

EXAMPLES

  PARENTHETICAL ENCLOSURES

Many study papers are being prepared with the aid of a computer, making the use of footnotes at the bottom of the page impractical.  The Questers have adopted the use of Parenthetical Enclosures.

BORROWED IDEAS, INFORMATION OR PARAPHRASING.

In 1843 Princess Alice wore a dress of Honiton lace over white spitalfields silk. (Spainhour, 11).

Honiton Lace braid is also called 'leaf’ tape (Warnick and Nilsson, 124).
