Schooltown Questers Share Their Historical Collections with the Community

For the Schooltown Questers #100, preserving history also means sharing the stories and treasures that have meaning to everyday people. The chapter has found a delightful way to do just that—by inviting the community to enjoy members’ personal collections through a rotating display at the Clinton Historical Society, 1 Fountain Street, Clinton, New York.

Each month, a Schooltown Quester takes a turn filling a special display case with items from one of her collections. The exhibits change every few months, giving members an opportunity to introduce visitors to their favorite treasures while sharing the stories behind them.

The displays have included a fascinating variety of collections. One member delighted visitors with her collection of international dolls, offering a glimpse into the cultures and traditions represented by each one.

Another display featured a collection of souvenir spoons, a treasured family legacy that began with Great Aunt Nan.

Nancy Stedman was born in 1912 in Eastbourne, England. After spending years working and caring for her aging parents, she finally had the opportunity to travel. She took numerous bus tours throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, bringing home a souvenir spoon from many of her journeys as a special reminder of the places she had visited.

When Nancy eventually stopped traveling, family members continued the tradition, giving her spoons from their own travels. Shortly before Nancy passed away, she gave her collection to her great-niece, a member of the Schooltown #100.

The gift sparked a new chapter in the collection's story. Inspired by her great-aunt, the Quester took up the challenge and began adding spoons from her own travels and experiences. Today, her collection has grown considerably, and the display at the Clinton Historical Society offered visitors just a small sampling of her magnificent collection.

The same member has also shared her Agatha Christie memorabilia, giving visitors another opportunity to explore a personal passion and the stories attached to a much-loved collection.

Through these changing exhibits, Schooltown Questers are doing more than displaying fascinating objects. They are encouraging curiosity, preserving family stories and inviting their community to discover the history that can be found in collections gathered over a lifetime.

It’s a wonderful example of how Questers give back to their communities—sharing history, educating, sparking conversation and having fun along the way.
