Iowa: The Sioux Theatre
Helping Restore the Historic Sioux Theatre in Sioux Rapids
For more than 70 years, Siouan Chapter #36 of Questers has been helping preserve the history of Iowa. One of the chapter’s most rewarding projects has been its ongoing partnership with the Sioux Rapids Area Historical Association in the restoration of the historic Sioux Theatre.
Built in 1946, the Sioux Theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains an important landmark in the Sioux Rapids community. Through several Iowa Questers Preservation and Restoration (P&R) grants, Siouan Questers have played a significant role in helping return the Theatre to its original appearance.
The chapter’s involvement began with a 2021 P&R grant, which helped fund the replication of a fabric awning that originally hung over a second-story window of the Theatre. The Sioux Rapids Area Historical Association expressed its appreciation for the financial assistance, which helped restore an important architectural detail to the historic building.
Siouan Questers continued their commitment to the Theatre with another P&R grant that helped restore the original 1940s Manley popcorn popper. The chapter also was instrumental in securing an Iowa P&R grant to restore the Theatre’s original sign, further bringing back the character and appearance of the 1946 landmark.
In 2023, Siouan Questers presented the Sioux Rapids Area Historical Association with a $1,500 P&R grant, awarded at Iowa Questers State Day. The funds helped pay for new carpeting in the Theatre. The carpet was carefully replicated from the original carpet that remains in the Theatre’s “smoking room.”
Members of Siouan Questers later toured the Theatre to see the newly installed carpet. They were delighted to see how beautifully the reproduction complemented the historic interior and were proud to have played a part in bringing the Theatre closer to its original appearance.
The chapter’s support has continued with a recent grant to help restore draperies in the Theatre doorways, the cry room, and the valance in the “smoking room.” These details will help complete the restoration of the Theatre’s interior and further preserve the atmosphere of this historic community gathering place.
Through each project, Siouan Questers have demonstrated the lasting impact that local preservation efforts can have. Their grants have helped restore not only individual pieces of the Theatre but also the historic character and story of the building itself.
Siouan Chapter #36 was chartered in 1955 and is the third Questers chapter organized in Iowa. Although all of its original charter members have passed on, the chapter continues their legacy by following the Questers motto, “It’s fun to search and a joy to find,” while actively supporting the preservation and restoration of historic landmarks.
The continuing restoration of the Sioux Theatre is a fitting example of that commitment. Through its partnership with the Sioux Rapids Area Historical Association, Siouan Questers #36 is helping ensure that an important piece of Sioux Rapids history will remain for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
