Exploring Hidden Histories

The Quince Street Seekers Celebrate Pride Month in Philadelphia

In June, members of the Quince Street Seekers #1523 - one of the newest Pennsylvania chapters in THE QUESTERS - gathered in the heart of Philadelphia for a powerful and enlightening walking tour of the city’s historic Gayborhood. Led by local organization Beyond the Bell Tours, the event was part of the chapter’s ongoing effort to explore diverse stories and preserve the rich cultural fabric of their region.

It is also part of the Quince Street Seeker’s quarterly social events that their Vice President, Maria Rodriguez, coordinates.

Timed to honor Pride Month, the LGBTQ+ history tour spotlighted significant landmarks, events, and activists who shaped Philadelphia’s role in the national movement for LGBTQ+ rights. Members were joined by Pennsylvania State President, Diane Bridi, who emphasized the importance of broadening our understanding of what “preservation” means.

“It’s not just buildings or objects we’re preserving - it’s stories, voices, and movements that deserve recognition as well,” Bridi shared.

One of the many takeaways from the tour was the story behind the black and brown stripes added to the rainbow Pride flag - a change that originated in Philadelphia. These colors were first used to identify businesses that supported racial inclusivity and actively welcomed Black and Brown LGBTQ+ individuals. The design eventually gained wider traction and is now a recognized symbol of intersectional pride around the world.

The Quince Street Seekers frequently incorporate walking tours and local events into their chapter programming as a way to connect, learn, and celebrate the living history all around them. By supporting inclusive, community-based storytelling, they exemplify the mission of THE QUESTERS of honoring the past while making space for a more inclusive future.
